“Vivid, unyielding realism gracing forms that should never be” is how US artist Haze XXL describes new works by artist Mow Skwoz.

The exhibition, which opens on Tuesday 3 April at Bivouac on William Street, is called MILK – an opaque white fluid secreted by female mammals for the nourishment of their young.

Skwoz has shared her ‘creatures’ in collaborative exhibitions at Outskirts, Out to Get Ya, and Windows on William, but MILK will be her first solo exhibition.

“These pieces are mostly creatures I think or maybe possessed or disturbed people,” she said.

“Maybe the boy in the Squirrel suit got lost in the woods when he was little, went crazy and now spends his time focusing on his hallucinations and living amongst the other woodland critters.

“Or maybe it’s just some creepy Perth musician with a Plushie fetish.”

The works are acrylic on canvas and watercolour, but Mow is not attached to either and prefers to experiment with mediums, colours and generous subjects.

“The people in the animal suits are friends of mine who have particularly interesting faces, good complexions and can harbour an evil glint,” she said.

Mow Skwoz identifies with a movement called retardism – an anti art movement that evolved around the formation of Amphetamine Reptile Records in the mid 80s.

“I identify with it because of the no art school bullshit, it’s based on raw desire to get images onto a canvas and doing it by any means possible without the mind being raped by a subconscious urge to please a certain ethos.”

“It’s also kind of a global community of artists like Math.I, Haze XXL, Alex Gilles and a bunch more. Their artwork is great, organic, no bullshit art; I feel lucky to be involved with these guys.” Mow said.

MILK will be on display until 2 June and all works are for sale.

Visit http://mowskwoz.tumblr.com/ for more about the artist.

Our current exhibition is called Earthly Delights by Perth lad Miles Noel. By day Scitech graphic designer by night and weekend, photographer and painter.

Miles defines his Earthly Delights as a beautiful creature of nature that surprises and transcends the everyday and never ceases to amaze.

In this exhibition, similar to his previous 10 Hours Project, his pieces are mostly portraits.

“I generally approach people with angular and dramatic features. It’s hard to say why I choose the people I do, they possess a certain indescribable quality.”

“I never paint people from life though, my process is too lengthy for a single sitting. I get my images from a 2-3 hr photography shoot and their personality comes out during that time.

“I do figure drawing from life when I can, and paint landscapes “Au plein air’ (in the open air) occasionally,” he said.

Earthly Delights showcases a new way of using QR codes to view the creation of the works captured using time-lapse. The QR codes on the flyers will take you straight to these videos.

“I used the same concept with the 10 Hour Project only with these works I didn’t give myself those time restraints,” he said.

View three of the works in progress:

The Garden

Sweet Serenity
Exotica

Most of these works were created amongst the trees down south and in a friend’s backyard shed. The pieces are very much informed by nature.

“I grew up in a monstrous garden in Shenton Park and my dad’s a botanist, so this brought about my appreciation for plants.”

The exhibition will run until 17 March and after that you’ll have a chance to view more of his work in an upcoming exhibition called Fragile Flesh.

“The work is done, I just need to find a suitable venue. It explores mortality through portraiture using expressionistic painterly effects.”

All of these works are for sale. Ask your friendly canteen worker for a flyer and to find out more.

Summer usually makes us giddy with excitement but 2012 is off the chart.

Best place to find all the info about what’s happening in our hood – William Street and the Perth Cultural Centre, is via the William Street Collective and the Perth Cultural Centre website.

The Perth Festival will take up its new home in the Cultural Centre. The Festival Gardens kicks off with Little Roy’s tribute to Nirvana on Friday 10 February. Other highlights include Death Cab for Cutie and Bonnie Prince Billy.

Also check out the State Theatre Centre’s program. Theatre in February is looking amazing. Dessert and a sticky afterwards perhaps?

St Jeromes Laneway Festival is on Saturday 11th February, there might still be tickets.

To top it off the Urban Orchard will host the uber sexy Spiegeltent for Fringe World.

It’d be a bloody good idea to come in for some plates and drinks with us before and or after the multitude of festivities.

Don’t worry the goat chops aren’t going anywhere. Sheesh we wouldn’t dare, there’d be hell to pay. We do have lots of new treats on offer though so we hope you can come in and give them a try.

We’ve got your quick lunches covered so you can get on back to work quickly, happy and satisfied.

The popular gypsy baked eggs will be making an appearance for lunch, we’ve got a larger selection of grab and eat bread type options, as well as salads and lunch-sized pizzas. If you’re up for a leisurely lunch (not all of us have to work you know) then you can still go a bigger plate like the slaughtermans gnocchi. And of course there’s the drinks list.

For dinner diners come in and graze on our selection of big and small plates. The maklouba of mt barker chicken, eggplant, roasted pine nut & almond yoghurt is pretty damn good and so’s the spanakopita.

Hope to serve it up to you soon campers.

In his latest offering, Miles depicts portraits immersed within a fluidly painted semi-abstract landscape. Loosely sweeping brush strokes evocative of flowers and feathers are melded together with lush semi-photographic realism, creating an arresting combination of styles. Miles employs his skills as a commercial photographer and graphic designer when constructing his paintings.

Be sure to grab a flyer and scan the QR codes with your smart phone to see a time-lapse video of how the work was made. All works are for sale.

Our recent exhibition at Bivouac takes a totally different direction than the previous illustrations, mixed media and large-scale paintings, with a retro Science Fiction digital print exhibition by artist Lindsay Dullea.

Lindsay’s exhibition Digital Ink is made up of pieces titled Atom, Eve and Rabbit Hole and is influenced by sci-fi authors John Wyndham, Jules Vern and HG Wells.

“My work draws on inspiration from sci-fi novels of the 60’s and 70’s, consumer culture, eastern philosophies, western mythologies, pop art, street art and poster art from around the globe,” Lindsay said.

“It’s ever evolving and has a heavily symbolic view of contemporary culture and I try to generate bold, humorous and provocative imagery.”

Lindsay Dullea is a Graphic Designer whose graphic artworks are vibrant in colour and often playful in theme, both aesthetically pleasing and abrasive.

Having worked in the advertising industry, Lindsay is interested in the use of logos and branding; a means of simplifying complex ideas into one economical image. The Digital Ink series does just that.

“By using bold, conflicting and unusual colour combinations and by placing focus on ambiguous symbols, the purpose of the work becomes questionable and confusing.

“Some of the works like Atom, Eve and Rabbit Hole are optical illusions with conflicting colours. They play with the viewers’ visual cortex, the effect of unusual colour combinations and abstract patterns alluding to a centre create a hypnotic effect.”

“I’ve worked long and hard to find the right colours for each piece. This body of work has taken me almost a year to build up.”

It’s Lindsay’s intention is to challenge the viewer’s visual perception as well as challenge their ideas on what constitutes a good piece of art.

“I think that the distinction between the two (art and graphic design) is the medium used. Gaphic art is generally associated with advertising, an area that I work in – hence the choice of medium. But art will mean different things to different people.”

“I think exhibiting in a space like Bivouac is great because it’s more of a relaxed atmosphere than a gallery so people can absorb it all whilst eating and hopefully it is a talking point.”

“I’m also working on another series of 10 pieces under the working title Purely Anesthetic which is inspired by ideas and ways we distract ourselves with Television, Religion and Consumer Culture.”

The Digital Ink theme has been described by some as trippy, hypnotic, vibrant and dizzying. Come in for some small and big plates, a beverage and a glimpse into Lindsay’s hypnotic, retro sci-fi world. These works are for sale, ask the Bivouac Canteen workers for a flyer with prices and more details.

What’s that, a new menu? But I like you just how you are, don’t go a changin’. Don’t worry we’re not getting a mega facelift and looking like a totally new dude, just a hair cut, new shirt, you know adjusting with the seasons.

Bivouac is changing up the menu, just a little bit to make sure our plates are seasonal and exactly what you feel like eating on a given spring/summer day.

You’ve said we can’t take off the haloumi, gnocchi or goat chops, so don’t worry they’re not going anywhere.

It’s really important to us to use local produce that doesn’t have to travel mega kms to get to our plates. We reserve the big trips for some of the really special items on the drinks list.

Our shtick is farm to plate, sustainably grown, darn good and uncomplicated food.

Read the whole menu if you like. It’s split up into daytime and evening menus and it’s pretty sweet.

If you’ve come to Bivouac for dinner and haven’t yet made it in bright and early, don’t forget we are open from 10am Tuesday to Saturday for a bouzy brunch. Ok not exactly ‘bright and early’ but early enough.

We have three perfectly formed combinations of brunch and booze just for you.

1. Gypsy baked eggs and Bloody Mary

2. The Revolution and bubbles

3. Canteen Tray and lager

$22 brunch is sure to get your weekend started off on the right foot.

The Bivouac blend is pouring beautifully too. Try it with milk and take in the hint of Guatemala, or if you’re a black coffee kind of a person then go straight up with the ‘Single Origin Hondy’ (from a fair trade co-op in Honduras).

Want to see what the local mag says about our boozy brunch? Go to the September 15 edition page 21.

What’s Bouzy?
